How to Improve Your Golf Swing
Posted on May 2, 2009, by Matt Kush, under Golf.
If you are in this position, it could be that you aren’t looking to the right place for answers. Maybe it isn’t your technique that is the issue, but rather your mentality when golfing. Hear me out here is it possible that you’re focused on skill, when the true problem is your mindset? Maybe it’s time to at least look at this aspect of your swing.
Let me ask a few pointed questions:
1) What is your pre-shot routine? 2) How do you let go of ego? 3) How do you find balance in your swing?
These may sound a little off topic, but hear me out. It’s a fact that professional golfers all have pre-shot routines to follow. They have spent time developing some type of ritual that allows them to be peaceful and relaxed before they shoot. What is yours? Have you found it? Take a look at some routines and see if they work for you.
Also, ego can play a big part in your game. If you’re more worried about looking bad to the people you’re playing with, you may be hampering your own game. It’s important to give yourself a chance at nonjudgmental play. Look at it this way: when you’re practicing, you somehow let go of the pressure to perform and just enjoy the moment. That’s the state you want to get to when playing a game.
Finally, are you balancing properly? Assuming you’re a righty, when you swing you should be able to pick your right foot up off the ground completely. If you can’t without toppling over, then you aren’t balancing before the swing. It will benefit you to work on that. Your weight should rest on your left foot as you take your swing.
