You’re A Drummer And You Need Other Musicians To Start A Live Band

Posted on May 1, 2009, by Matt Rushton, under Music.

Are you tired of practicing your instrument all on your own? If you have some songs learned and want to play them with other people, then I’m sure you’ve considered the possibility of playing in a live band. Working with other guitarists, singers, drummers and bass players in a live band is the next and best step to take after you learn how to play your instrument.

How can you start or find a live band of your very own? It’s as easy as contacting other musicians who also want to join a live band of their own. There are plenty of great musicians out there who would love to play in a live band. You only need to do a little work to find them.

What do you need to do to find other musicians looking to play in a live band? You should start by checking musician postings at your local music store. Pretty much every music store provides a bulletin board where musicians can post ads for free with the goal of finding other musicians that want to play music together.

Another important thing to do is to ask the music store for a list of music teachers who teach students to play on instruments you need to have in your band. The music teachers are a great resource for contacting students who are ready and want to play in a live band. You can build a good list of potential band members this way.

After you have a list of musicians together, just pick up the phone and start calling them. Make sure ahead of time that you know the type of music you want to play. Having a list of songs you want to play in your new band is a good idea so when you contact the other musicians, you be sure they’re interested in playing the same music as you.

The next step in getting your live band off the ground is to get the musicians together and try playing some music. In the beginning you will want to get together with just one or two people at a time. Be sure everyone has a song or two prepared to play and then simply try playing together. You’ll know right away if you’re going to be able to play together or not. If you don’t know for sure how many musicians you need, read my article about the typical live band lineup.

Once you finally get a group of musicians who can play a complete song together you’ll have the beginnings of your live band. Set some easy goals right off the bat. An important and easy goal is to learn 2 new songs before you get together again. When you get together again, you can work on playing all the songs you know from start to finish.

You will have to deal with some challenging problems to keep your band functioning and to become successful. The thing to never forget is to have a common goal and keep working together to reach it. Make a goal of learning at least one new song every week. Having common goals will keep you focused and each time your reach your goal, your band will get better!
